Tool 01

Steel tape

Use a firm measuring tape for cleaner width and drop measurements.

Tool 02

Two points

Measure each window in more than one place to catch small wall variations.

Tool 03

Clear notes

Record room name, window width, finished length, and mounting position.

Tool 04

Light check

Observe morning and evening light before choosing opacity or lining.

Measuring Method

Start with the room, then the window.

Measurements work best when they consider architecture first: ceiling height, window frame, wall clearance, furniture placement, and how the fabric should visually fall.

Step 01

Choose mount position

Decide whether the treatment sits inside the frame, outside the frame, or higher above the window for a more elongated drapery effect.

Step 02

Measure full width

For curtains, measure the complete area you want covered, including extra wall space on both sides if you want the panels to stack away from the glass.

Step 03

Measure finished length

Measure from the chosen hardware position to the preferred endpoint: sill, below sill, floor touch, or a softer floor break.

Step 04

Confirm fullness

For a softer, more generous fall, allow enough fabric width so the panels do not look flat when closed.

Width is not just the glass. It is the visual frame.

Left Stack Right Stack

For drapery, extending the measurement beyond the window can make the opening feel larger and allow fabric to rest more gracefully when open.

Small measurement choices change the entire atmosphere.

Rule 01

Measure every window

Do not assume matching windows are identical. Small differences can affect the final fit.

Rule 02

Account for hardware

Rod height, bracket depth, and track position all influence how fabric falls.

Rule 03

Consider furniture

Check nearby sofas, benches, beds, radiators, and tables before choosing length.

Rule 04

Keep notes simple

Record width, height, mount type, room name, and preferred fabric direction.
